AN OPEN LETTER FROM
Perry N. Dellelce, Managing Partner
It is with great pleasure that I write this letter to law students inviting you to apply to our firm, Wildeboer Dellelce LLP, for a summer or articling position with us. My name is Perry Dellelce. I am the managing partner and a founder of Wildeboer Dellelce and, on behalf of our lawyers, students and staff, I would like to tell you about our firm.
WILDEBOER DELLELCE - THE FIRM
Our Story
Wildeboer Dellelce is a law firm like no other in Canada. We opened our doors at Toronto’s First Canadian Place in February 1993. The five founding partners were friends who decided to leave the security and prestige of one of the "seven sister" Bay Street firms to follow their vision of building a corporate and tax boutique law firm that would compete with Canada’s large established corporate law firms, while having a lot of fun at the same time. In our first week we purchased a pool table for our library. While the pool table does not get as much use as in those early days, it still serves as a symbol of our firm’s identity and culture.
Since 1993, we have been able to create a law firm that now boasts more than 30 legal professionals that serve the legal needs of a diverse client base of both public and private businesses, while managing to have a great time doing so. In 2001, we expanded our scope by opening a branch office in Waterloo to help us build on our base of technology-sector clients. In 2006, we moved to our own building, Wildeboer Dellelce Place, at the corner of Bay and Richmond in Toronto. It is with pride that I can now say that no day goes by without our lawyers sitting across a boardroom table and doing transactions with the largest law firms in the country. In fact, Wildeboer Dellelce is the only firm of its size in Canada that competes effectively and successfully against the full service national law firms in the corporate, securities and tax areas.
Our People
Our firm’s greatest strengths are its people and the environment of care and mutual respect that they have created for one another. It goes without saying that to be a success in the Bay Street legal world, you must possess intelligence, integrity, dedication, some common sense and you must work very hard. Most of our lawyers began their careers at major Bay Street firms and demonstrated these qualities in abundance. There is no shortage of academic prizes and professional accolades on the resumes of our lawyers. However, they each came to realize that the big firm environment was not for them. They were drawn to our firm’s vision of doing great legal work, building our own business and having fun while doing so. The friendship that was the origin of our firm continues on with all of the members of Wildeboer Dellelce today. It is this spirit of friendship, and perhaps the fact that we do not take ourselves too seriously, that makes us a great firm for clients and, equally as important, a great law firm for our lawyers, students and staff.
Our Practice
We often describe ourselves as a “business law” firm. By this message, we are saying that our clients are business people and that we understand their perspective and their needs. However, the scope of legal issues that potential clients face today is wide ranging. We have chosen to focus our practice on the traditional four pillars of business law, namely, securities, corporate/commercial, banking and tax law.
We are a transaction oriented law firm. On any given day, our lawyers and students are working on public offerings of securities, private placements of securities, public and private mergers and acquisitions, bank financed lending transactions and corporate reorganizations, as well as the tax planning that underlies almost every transaction.
Our Clients
We sometimes refer to ourselves as an entrepreneurial law firm. This is a reflection of both our own origins and the spirit of our clients. Many of our clients are early stage growth oriented companies that are raising money and doing deals in order to develop their businesses. Over time these companies succeed and mature, and we have been and continue to be there beside them along the way. This allows us to obtain special insights into our clients and to develop strong relationships with them.
We represent a wide range of entrepreneurs, public and private corporations, financial institutions and institutional investors, both in Canada and internationally. Some are household names, while others hope to be some day. The types of business that our clients engage in are without limit. More and more we see our clients developing the innovative ideas that will shape the future of our world, such as alternative energy sources, bio-technology, software and hardware engineering, the Internet, and telecommunications. We also represent a wide range of clients in more traditional industries, such as manufacturing, natural resources and the financial sector.
The spirit that binds us to our clients is our shared culture of enthusiasm, entrepreneurship, innovation and having fun!
